Participation in school athletic activities is a privilege and being a member of a team requires a commitment to something greater than one’s self. New Hanover Township Student Athletes are expected to demonstrate responsibility, leadership, accountability, and perseverance. As role models and representatives of the school, team members are required to abide by the following rules:
- Responsibility – Any student who wishes to try out for an athletic team MUST have a completed sports physical BEFORE THE FIRST PRACTICE. Students who do not have a completed physical on the first day of team activities will not be eligible to participate for that season
- Leadership – Student Athletes will be expected to uphold a high standard of behavior both during and outside of team activities. Players are expected to challenge and encourage each other during team activities but also to demonstrate exemplary behaviors at all times, especially during school. Violations of the student code of conduct at any time may result in disciplinary actions up to and including suspension from team activities or dismissal from the team.
- Accountability – Team members are expected to be present at all team activities. Any unexcused absences will result in dismissal from the team. A student who attends school will be expected at any practice or game held that day, and any student who leaves early due to illness will only be excused upon the recommendation of the school nurse. Absences due to outside activities or family obligations should be brought to the coach’s attention at least one day in advance and will be reviewed on a case by case basis.
- Perseverance – Student athletes must show drive and work ethic by putting maximum effort into their athletic pursuits while also completing all required school work. Any player who falls behind in their school work may be required to catch up before being eligible to participate in team activities.
